White Women: Cool it.

elizaeliza:

ATTN White Women - please stop calling the cops on people of color living their lives. You have GOT to stop. You’re fucking up lives, and you’re making ME look bad! Yeah, that’s right - as a white woman myself I have a real PR problem with these shenanigans, so let’s fix it.

But hey, I get it. We are nervous nellies! Our frayed nerves require so many relaxing baths and dessert yogurts, it could never possibly be enough. So anxiety takes over and everything is a threat! Especially if you’re racist! JK, of course YOU’RE not racist. I would never call YOU racist - because calling you racist would make you cry, and I don’t have time for you to go take a few more baths before the end of this post. Plus I can’t possibly unpack all the threads of racism woven into each individual. So stay racist (I’m kidding! You’re not racist! You’re so pretty!) just stop calling the police because of it.

As white women, we do have advantages. (I didn’t say privileges! I know you got picked on in high school! It must have been so hard. You’re very pretty.) I mean we have two great skills when we feel threatened: appealing to authority and nosy small talk. We are MASTERS of both. We are praised all over the internet for our lightning-fast requests to speak to management. We are SO GOOD at that! People LOVE it! But we need to save it for the important stuff: Applebees waiters who take so long we miss out on happy hour prices on apps and tinis. That’s why it’s important to start using the other skill - nosy small talk.

Whywohs (can I call you whywohs? You can call me that! Ooh, and let’s braid each other’s hair later - god, we LOVE touching hair!) Whywohs, when you feel nervous around a stranger, do what your mom used to do and start talking to that stranger like you already know them. Don’t make it obvious that you are feeling them out - just imagine you’re both early for book club and Nancy hasn’t gotten there with the wine yet. “Did you get caught in the rain yesterday? I about lost my mind, I had JUST gotten my hair blown out. That house is for sale you know.” OR “Oh my goodness, is this college tour long or what?! If I don’t get to a Panera bread soon I’m gonna pass out! Where you boys from?” OR “You know when my daughter was little she called it a Caramel Macchio! Like Ralph Macchio! I miss when she was little. Now we work together at Ann Taylor. What’s are you drinking?” When they say “I know, I’m in real estate,” or “We’re from California, I think we just passed a snack machine” or “Nothing today, we’re just meeting up here,” - you’ll feel better. They are just being normal people! The weirdo is actually you! But THIS way you don’t traumatize anyone or get dragged online, weirdo. And you might even make friends!

Its ok - everyone gets nervous around strangers. Especially now that so many strangers have guns. But a stranger is just a friend you haven’t met yet. You know who said that? Gwyneth Paltrow. I KNOW! YOU LOVE HER! So use your OTHER chatty white woman superpower and make friends, not phone calls to the police.

Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti

“Binti is the first story that World Fantasy Award winner Nnedi Okorafor has written which is set in space.

The eponymous Binti is the first of her people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Oomza has previously wronged the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares, and Binti’s interplanetary travel will bring her within their deadly reach.

If she hopes to survive the legacy of this ancient conflict, she will need both the the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself - but first she has to make it there, alive.”

Maybe this is a crazy question, but how did Europeans know what Africans looked like? I know that some of the paintings here are of North Africans/Middle Easterners, but others clearly depict people born south of the Sahara. I've heard of Prester John but I never imagined that medieval Europeans were aware that Prester John would have had brown skin. Am I missing something?

medievalpoc:

Like. There are a lot of things I could say here. But I’m just going to do my best to answer your question, and the answer is either very simple or very complicated, depending on your current point of view.

1. “They” knew what people with brown skin looked like because people with brown skin had been there literally THE ENTIRE TIME. Some (and father back, ALL) of “them” had brown skin themselves.

2. “People with Brown Skin” and “Europeans” are not separate and mutually exclusive groups.

3. No matter how far back you go, the mythical time that you’re looking for, when all-white, racially and culturally isolated Europe was “real”, will continue to recede from your grasp until it winkles out the like imaginary place it is.

We can just keep going back. In every area, from all walks of life, rich and poor, kings and peasants, artists and iconoclasts, before there were countries and continents, before there were white people.

The time when “EVERYONE” in Europe was White does not exist. They knew what people with brown skin looked like because they were there. They knew what “Africans” looked like because they were there, and they weren’t “they”, they were us, or you. I think what you’re missing is something that never existed.

Marvel’s Black Panther (2018)

“The film’s box office and critical triumphs is one of the biggest success stories in recent memory. Week after week the film crushed all competition at the theaters and instantly generated memes, fans, and talks of sequels and spin-offs. The film’s reign would continue as it became the #1 superhero film of all time in the States, recently surpassing Titanic, becoming the third highest grossing film in the United States. It was finally dethroned at the box office by Pacific Rim: Uprising last month. But given how people have reacted to the character and his setting it is highly unlikely that this will be our last trip to Wakanda.

Now playing in theaters, Black Panther features a star-studded cast that includes Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke,  Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kani…”
